Impeach the President?

 Washington Post Article
Fox News Article

Following the Mueller report that was released on April 18, talk about the possible impeachment of President Donald Trump has created a divide in the Democratic party. Both the Washington Post and Fox News wrote articles about how the House Democrats have decided to not open any immediate impeachment proceedings. This topic has created heated debates and discussions so I thought it would be interesting to get the perspectives of a generally left wing news outlet (Washington Post) and a right wing news outlet (Fox News) on the same topic. Obviously there was bound to be some differences in the discussions brought up in the articles as well as the language used by the different outlets.

Because the recent discussion has been that there will be no immediate impeachment, the right wing has the more favorable view on the topic with the left wing being more split in their view. Before looking at the article, I assumed that the Fox News article would use more favorable words while the Washington Post article would have more words with negative connotations. However, that was the exact opposite of what happened in the articles. Even in just the titles, Fox News uses words that have a harsher connotations than the Washington Post article. The Fox News article's title is, "Dem leaders reject immediate impeachment proceedings in urgent conference call" while the Washington Post Article is, "House Democratic leaders say no immediate plans to open impeachment proceedings against Trump". The Washington Post makes it seem less urgent than the Fox News article. The Washington Post article stated similar facts about the Mueller report as Fox News about how they didn't find any evidence that he conspired with Russia but that he may have obstructed the investigation. However, while the Washington Post uses the last bit of information as possible hope for Democrats, Fox News sees it as just another way for the Democrats to try and impeach the president.

The different use of language in both articles creates different meanings. This just shows how important it is to try and expose ourselves to different opinions because if I were to just have read the Washington Post article, I would have only seen the hopeful side of the possible impeachment of President Trump. However, by reading the Fox News article, I also saw that many people don't think that the report holds any grounds to impeach the president. I think it is also equally if not more important to expose ourselves to impartial news outlets. We rely on media for the news and if we are fed biased information, it can form a view that isn't accepting of other's views.

  1. It is very interesting that Fox News would have harsher connotations than the Washington Post. Just while watching TV I have seen these ads that talk about impeaching Trump. Some of them include pictures of immigrants and children to make the person watching the commercial feel bad about supporting Trump. The use of the different languages in the articles are interesting as well. I feel like lots of mainstream news outlets will be bias towards a certain side of a news story and not report the full story. It is important to get both sides of the story, or to read an unbiased news source or else the reader may not be getting the full story.
